Roasted maple fretboard question

I tried to sand my roasted maple fret (only one of them) and its lost its silky smooth feel. From you experienced members, how do you restore that silky smooth feel on the roasted maple fretboard?

Was it lacquered or was it plain wood before you sanded it, and what was the intention behind sanding it?

If it was lacquered, was it glossy or satin lacquer?
