Use Kemper as a MIDI interface?

I know the audio part is possible - even for the iPhone (class compliant USB audio connection = yay!)

But I am struggling to get the Kemper to transmit MIDI data sent to the MIDI In port via USB to the Mac/iPhone as a MIDI datastream. E.G. for connecting an external synth, being able to play the synth's keys and have those notes recorded as MIDI data in a DAW.

Some Googling shows people now happy that the Kemper can now send MIDI out, but it seems the implementation isn't as full as it could be. The manual isn't written for this type of use case, so I may be missing something.

Anyone?
