old strings are best on acoustic and bass
    This is the wrong answer.
i know everyone disagrees with me - i hate the sound of most acoustics!
Your music collection must be a bit limited.

This thread has started to drift away. But I would say if you are putting on new strings before a studio session a day or two should get your strings fully stretched in.
Mine are usually stretched in after one day (I suppose it depends on your string make) I love zingy strings it is so refreshing. I do hate the dull sound of dead strings.
When we were really poor we used to boil our strings in a pan of water with Fairy Liquid.
I don't want those days again.

I knew I was not the only one Marxski, in fact it was common practice if you were gigging a lot in those  days. I remember it well.
