Get a boost pedal or use one of these?

Obv I’ll experiment but before I do, what do you reckon?:

My dirty pedals go:

Barber BUSS -> Lightspeed -> EP Boost

I also want to put a boost in front so I can either dirty up or just enlouden (made up word alert)

I don’t have a 2nd clean boost pedal. I do have (in no particular order)

SD-1
Compressor (Fat General)
Timmy
Flex Drive (Xotic AC boost clone)
<other pedals that don’t go clean enough>

When I get chance, which shall I try first as a utility boost to go before my dirt?
Red ones are better.

  • Solo Dallas Storm can give a good kick and the 'limit' control is useful to tidy up the sound. Or the Spark booster has three types of boost, one being clean.

    All of them.

    Seriously, try 'em all.

Who knows which one you'll like best...

I do like a compressor with the compression very low as a boost.

I put the EP upfront, usually to give subsequent pedals a kick in the nuts. For just volume, as suggested a lowish compressor or Graphic set neutral but with added volume
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

  • Sorry to hijack thread, but a similar query from me. I have an old Marshall Valvestate 8080 and use the clean channel and a Boss FZ5 and a ProCo Rat. I was looking for a boost possibly with a small bit of grit.
Would the DOD Bifet do the job? So I could use it as a clean boost as well before the Rat and Fuzz....

I ended up sticking a bunch of pedals in the loops of a QMX4 I’ve not been using and was able to rapidly flip-flop between them. I was able to fairly rapidly dismiss the Fat General and SD-1 for this application (for different reasons - just weren’t doing the specific thing I was after - both ace in their own right obv)

    Weirdly I ended up
removing the post drive EP boost and
settling on my Archer in front

which embarrasses me a bit cos I’m normally the one pointing out that the best thing about Klons is the clipping character and set low gain it’s not happening)

SD1 - great boost if you like it’s eq curve - zero gain / tone to suit n max the level ..

Fat General would be just the ticket imo - use the blend (Balance?) to keep some dynamics, but also use it as a "normal" compressor for cleaner stuff.

I'd thought so too - but walting in enough of a prominent boost for what I wanted here.

Similarly I thought the SD-1 would work nicely but (presumably because of how either the amp or other pedals were set it just resulted in an overly dull and very honky effect even at max tone control.

It's all good - I love both when they are doing what I'd normally use them for.
