watching Gogglebox with Mrs Bert...............  they were "reviewing"    One Day

the early scene where Dex rescues Emma from a "situation" and subsequently chats (her up) to her on the stairs............all perfectly normal,  no corny chat up lines and totally recognisable, (to me and mrs bert)

The two lassies from the North East (with the lovely blue staffie)  just could't comprehend it,  totally bemused, ( as were a couple of other "young'uns"  on the show )

"what are they doing?"
"I think that's how they used to chat people up"
"noo way, hes talking to her"

Pass the sanatogen,  dressing gown, slippers and bring me my bath-chair

I dont want to be young again TBH,  well not now.  Id be young again back when I was young or even old back when I was young  - but then again,  that's based on what I know now.........................oh fuck me why did I start this..............

I'm only 41 and I look at people in their early 20s and am bemused. I really understand how my parents must have felt having to deal with me now.

How do they do it now without talking to each other? Is it all Snapchat and dick pics?

    Ah.

I'm not old enough for Gogglebox so I'll never find out.

I’m glad I’m not young anymore, so I don’t have to wear skintight trousers with no socks.

"noo way, hes talking to her"

That suggests the phrase "to chat up" is not entirely alien to young people, but I guess the approach is totally different?  I can't imagine what they actually do say.

Anyway, I'm old and I 've never known how to chat someone up.  But maybe that's another discussion altogether.

there may be an amount of poetic license in the actual words (it was a couple of evenings ago !!) , but that was the crux of their conversation/observation.   It just totally flabbergasted me(us)   -  not in a "gammon"  way but just realisation of how different "we" were.

Not having kids,  we have no real life exposure to "it"  and its a long time since friends kids were that age

My work environment is full of people much younger than me and we get two large intakes of graduates every year, so I'm in the company of lots of young people, without interacting with them very much... I can't really explain or give good examples, but they are very different from the equivalent groups a couple of decades ago.  Certainly quieter and seemingly less confident, but they're kind of oblivious to their surroundings...  And they seem to do everything in groups - all go to lunch together, all get a drink at the same time.  It's a bit like Village of the Damned.

Since everyone below the age of 30 is now under android or iOS control the need for speech has largely disappeared. All communication is operated via thumbs. In a few more generations we will evolve to have no vocal chords, heads permanently tilted forward at 45 degrees and we will shut down automatically during power cuts.
