To recone or not to recone?

I have a 1972 Deluxe reverb which is fitted with a lovely WGS G12C. It came with the original Oxford 12L6 but the cone is ripped and battered so it's collecting dust in a garage. I am tempted to get it reconed because I'm intrigued by what it will sound like. Also, although I don't plan on selling the amp, it could be nice to have the original speaker working.

Has anyone tried a 12L6?

I think I have the same speaker which came in my 1969 Deluxe Reverb, currently boxed up with a WGS G12C/s installed. It's quite nice at low volume but anything above 3and it can sound a bit unpleasant. Whether that's the old cone or just a generally weak speaker I don't know.

I'd get it reconed just so you have the original working. It could sound nice with a new cone as well!

If it’s the original for the amp then it’s worth more in its broken condition than it is if reconed. Keep it in a box and leave it alone. They don’t sound great anyway.
