In all my years playing bass I've never seen anything as impressive as this.
Mind blown!

Mohini is super talented. There’s a Rick Beato interview with her where she explains about her upbringing and learning bass, etc.

She’s sooooo brilliant it makes me cry and shout with joy. AMAZING.
Roland said: Scales are primarily a tool for categorising knowledge, not a rule for what can or cannot be played.
Supportact said: [my style is] probably more an accumulation of limitations and bad habits than a 'style'.

Those lightning quick legatos on a full sized bass. She must have Hulk hand strength.

    Hard study and determination.

I would hazard a guess that - like the young Steve Vai - Mohini is a transcribing by ear MOFO.

    She's amazing

I first heard her when she was playing with Marco from the Aristocrats:

Also if you are wondering where she's come from she's been successful in India for a number of years:

Here she is playing with A R Rahman at Berklee. (Depending on how you feel about Indian prog rock)

The time feel is amazing given the speed. And there me moaning about sax solos being impossible on guitar - let alone on bass with fingers.  What an incredible talent

  • Wow, she's a bit good at that isn't she. That type of modern jazz really isn't my taste but very well played indeed.

I know, she's absolutely locked in timing wise, just incredible stuff. She really is phenomenal.

That composition is from 1960, so not really 'modern' even by jazz standards.

Anything after about 1930s is "modern" by my tastes in jazz :D (apart from the trad jazz revival stuff of course)

Some of what Mohini plays during her recent Beato interview is very close to the stylings of Les Claypool. He plays drums well enough to compose parts. I wouldn't know how well Les sight reads nowadays.

As a student of Indian music, Mohini will have been formally taught how to vocalise drum or percussion parts before being allowed to actually play the instruments. It is drilled in deeply.

It’s (probably too obviously) transcribing a famous jazz sax solo so it is more of a technical exercise than creating music. Unless you mean the John Coltrane solo in which case you’ve just annoyed sixty years of jazz fans.
