Locking posts on tremolos - do they really work?

The ones in which there is a little grub screw inside the post that locks down to the base of the body insert (like the picture below).

Do they really work? Do they really improve tuning stability? Will, for example, wrapping a non-locking post in some PTFE tape achieve the same effect, by rendering more robust the connection between post and insert?
