Playing a guitar out of context and/or what it was designed for

Sorry about the header - not sure how to best phrase it

So, whilst the Strat was never designed to be played the way Jimi Hendrix played it - What guitar has been played in a genre of music that probably defies all logic of it ever working in that format

To me the most obvious example is Ted Nugent playing a Gibson Byrdland - When I say this, then maybe you can now better understand my header/text/question

Yet equally it shows that any boundaries are false and we can play any guitar, in any style - But even so, we do tend to put some guitars into a certain style/format ie pointy headstock/Floyd Rose into some form of speed machine, with hi-gain - Would anyone buy such a guitar to play jazz in a Wes Montgomery combo

So with Ted Nugent and his Byrdland as two options, from about as far apart as possible , What other bizarre combinations can we come up with

I would go with either Bill Frisell or Julian Lage and a Telecaster.

Even weirder is Julian Lage and a Stratocaster...

    ...Which doesn't work.

I think I have heard someone playing good jazz on a Stratocaster with a Cool Rails in the neck position.

What a great player Ted Nugent is btw.

The guitarist in U2 plays an Explorer, which always struck me as a bit odd.

Vince Clarke of Erasure with his (Dobro DM33H I think) resonator acoustic -

One of the best Jazz tones I ever got came from a JayDee "basic" Explorer with Ibanez Super something humbuckers. The owner both before and after me was HarrySeven.

I have recorded Adrian Belew style twangbar stunt guitar parts using my Fender AVRI'62 Jaguar. Just needs enough fuzz!

Not sure why? There is nothing in the music of U2 or the playing style of The Edge to dictate what electric guitar design(s) might be the most appropriate.

John McGeoch of Magazine, on the other hand, really had to have the Yamaha SG1000. The 2000 and 3000 models - although notionally superior - would have been wrong.

I did see Lucky Lopez Evans once. He is an ageing Mississippi blues guy and was doing the gig with a loaner guitar. For some reason whoever was responsible for sorting the loaner gave him a super strat with a Floyd Rose. Looked a bit incongruous and was completely out of tune after about ten minutes of the set never to return to in tune.

I guess Geordie Walker with his ES 295, not an obvious choice for post punk rock.

Albert Collins was best known for playing Telecasters. It was Albert King that had the Flying V.

Both Albert King and Lonnie Mack played Vs, while Poppa Chubby actually had a signature V ... and you could count Bonamassa with Vs and Explorers and John 5 with Telecasters.

I was a big fan of Nugent in his early days, I felt that using that Byrdland gave an 'on the edge' feel to his playing which I loved ... sadly, as I don't think one can separate the politics from the musician, I won't even give him a listen today ...
