Can anything be done about an ugly inlay?

Yes  but there’s nothing wrong with that. 

Personally I like the inlay but it’s your guitar so you can do what you like with it.

Or have it on a t-shirt or baseball cap. 

Less painful, and less permanent.

I like the googly eyes idea too.

I would go with others on here and say there's nowt wrong with the inlay ... and removing it would f--k up the guitar. Personally I think it gives the guitar caracter.

Ah.. the classic ‘ tribal burning spear inlay’ conundrum .
Some person in Japan designed that , had it signed off , then put in production ( in Korea , China or somewhere) and You, you ungrateful bastard,  think a tribal burning spear.... heading towards your neck pickup at unimaginable speed is not worthy of infinite creativity??
You should hang  your head in shame.... or paint over it and never experience the Mojo....
