Another of the greats gone. I guess his son now carries the mantle.

Oh, I didn't see that coming, but I guess he had been out of the spotlight for quite some time.  80 is not a bad innings for someone in the Southern rock field.

    RIP

Part of the soundtrack to my youth, etc....I still have the albums.
He wrote some memorable tunes and had an incredible life.

Owner of one of the Top Ten Worst Moustaches of the 1970s, but a wonderful player, so entirely forgiven. Wrote some great tunes too. RIP.

Sad news, great player. This version of Jessica and his solo from around 3:40 is just glorious. RIP Dickie!

Loved his distinctive playing style, and that TONE. His music will live on and Jessica will still be getting air time long after we are all gone. RIP Dickey.

Funny you should link to that one - well, not funny when you think about it - because I played it just a few days ago (before this sad news) prompted by a thread here about a Les Paul named "Jessica". Most people apparently - and shame on them for their ignorance - didn't seem to know about Dickie and the sublime Jessica.

Chaps, seriously now, don't be misled by the awful moustache and the dreadful hat, Dickie Betts was a true master of the instrument.

If I thought wearing a Stetson would make me play like that I’d wear one all the time!

This is also a gem. It was a highlight in my Southern Rock band's shows and fun to play:

Really great player. So melodic and I loved his cleanish Les Paul tone. Dicky and Peter Green are my favourite Les Paul players. RIP Dicky.

The Allman Brothers Band were my favourite band, gutted when Duane passed, managed to see them when they played Knebworth in the 70’s
R.I.P. Dicky, Thanks for the music.

The man who cued up ‘and on tonight’s show’ more than anyone else….., in the world.

And the most musical sound to ever come from a Les Paul
