Blind tone test - opinions, please

What's Hot

Hi all,

Messing on with pickups, guitars, etc. and trying to decide on something.  I shan't add any more, as I am curious to know how this tone comes across to you guys.

It's recorded using a Quad Cortex (Fender-type tone) and I just rolled a YouTube jam track and did a one-take play through of bridge/neck with and without extra gain.

Curious to know what you think and if anybody has any idea on guitar or pickups.  You might like or loathe it - matters not!

I liked the neck pickup sound. Not so keen on the bridge pickup sound.

Where the licks get a bit Gilmourish, it is tempting to believe one is listening to a Stratocaster. If you had played Jerry Donahue type double string bends, it might suggest Telecaster.

Beyond those associations, there is nothing in your recording to suggest any particular make/model of electric guitar.

If one of my home recordings sounded the way that yours does - and I had not kept proper notes on what gear was used - I would guess either Jazzmaster or S2 Vela.

Definitely Daisyrock, the sparkly mids give it away.

I like the initial lead sound best, I think, although a switch at some point adds interest.

    No idea

Although the neck pickup sounded single coily.

Interesting!  I didn't think anybody would get what it is or pickups - obviously the possibilities are near-endless.  I should perhaps have phrased the question differently.

There's no exciting big reveal but wondered what kind of general character came across.

I bet once the answer is revealed you'll get a load of people who could definitely tell.

I'd guess an ES-335 or similar semi-solid guitar.

I'd be tempted to say "it was my SG", see the answers and then post "oops - sorry, no, it was my JEM777! Silly me."

I preferred the second half of the recording - kinda got a Santana vibe. Other than that ... within a band context I think you'd be splitting hairs to be honest...

Is that you Robben? I liked the third section the best (00:27-00:49). Little less bite and fizziness.

For me it was dominated by that kind of pushed blackface sizzling drive tone.
I've leaned that I can't tell much about guitars by ear except really obvious stuff like strat positions 2 and 4.

    Really nice playing BTW.

Thanks for the kind comments :)  I am a total thrash metal guy really and 'try' to shred more than anything but love jamming to stuff like this.  @monquixote - as you know, I am looking at increasing my theory knowledge to help me with more complex patterns.

I will come back later or tomorrow with more info on the guitar!

May be miles off, but I though P90 neck, Humbucker bridge.

I thought it sounded most like a humbucker guitar with the bridge pickup a fair bit hotter than the neck, and the tone rolled back a bit.

    I think it's a PRS :).
