I'm glad you told us it was Charles as I'm not sure I'd have recognised who it was otherwise to be honest. Looks like one of those local artists who have lots of technique but just aren't that good somehow. I guess like playing lots of notes quickly but getting the chords slightly wrong?

I like it. The artist explained that part of the reason for red everywhere was that the red tunic Charles was wearing in the sitting would have dominated the painting anyway, so why not let the red loose

I like the painting about as much as the subject matter. Both awful

I expect there's a logic to it somewhere, just not sure where. The bits that aren't red look good to me!
True, the artist has skills so you wonder what his point is. Perhaps it's poppy red to reference the Chinese addicts we created so that brits could drink tea and wear silk.
Yeah, the artist is very skilled. Must say I like it - the non-red bit is very well done, and about as flattering an image of the man as I've seen in a very long time.

That sounds like the kind of bollocks I used to come up with when I used to do paintings, and couldn't be bothered to paint a proper background

His Maj's hairline hasn't been like that for quite a while.

Maybe it was painted at that weird tomato festival they have in Spain.

It's an impossible task nowadays. Anything too conventionally realistic would look boring, unnecessary (why not a photograph) and underscore the idea that the monarch is living in the past.  Any fresh elements introduced to make it look different and modern will look arbitrary and divide opinion (unless everybody can agree it's awful when the whole point of the exercise is to unite opinion in a positive way).  I bet they wish they didn't have to make the doomed effort but tradition dictates portraits so they have to be done.

It's excellent. I assumed it was a visual statement indicating the Empire is soaked in blood.
