What's Hot
Hi all.

I'm guessing there's a few bikers on here so trying to pick your brains....

My wife has a CBR600 (2002 model, mileage around 50k, was fully serviced, no damage or marks) that has been laid up for ten years on the basis we are both too old/fat/terrified to ride it.  It's sitting in the garage and needs to go, so, two questions:

What's the best way to get rid?
What's a ballpark value?

Comments gratefully received

Andrew

Have a look on the Autotrader website for what's being asked?

It would be polite just to do some basic maintenance on the thing first, to the extent that it will get its MoT and run cleanly. If it has genuinely sat for a decade without even being started occasionally then you are looking at  a full flush of the fuel system, oil change and probably a new set of boots.
Old, overweight and badly maintained. Unlike my amps which are just old and overweight.

Let it go cheap enough and someone will happily do that for you.

With that mileage and sat for so long it's a bit of a punt and probably worth less a thousand pounds in today's market.

If you did the stuff to get it road worthy, and it's in good nick overall then you might double it depending on the model, is it an F or a RR?

It’ll certainly be worth a lot more if it’s running and MOT’d. Has it been kept stored with the battery on a float charge? Or is the battery completely flat? If the latter you’re looking at a new battery, then at the very least draining and cleaning the fuel tank, fuel pipes, an oil and filters change, plus possibly new plugs and maybe tyres. Obviously if you can do some of the work yourself then it’ll be cheaper.

Be very careful about starting it up if it hasn’t been run or at least turned over regularly. You risk wrecking the engine if a piston has seized or the piston rings are stuck. Take the plugs out, put it in gear and turn the rear wheel to see if it rotates freely. It’ll help if you dribble a small amount of light oil down the bores through the plug holes first and let that sit for a while.

If it was left for that long with fuel in it the carbs will have probably guncked up too.

2002 CBR6 will be EFI so you'd be looking at de-gluing the injectors. There has been ethanol in most petrol for long enough now that whatever was in that tank to have turned to varnish.

Years and years ago I replaced the engine in a MK2 Escort, was told it 'worked ok' , it needed a tow start and when it did start it belched white smoke out of the exhaust for a good 4 or 5 miles, like thick fog kind of smoke, I was then told it 'worked ok' but was left sitting for years.
Once the smoke cleared it was fine.

^ From the startup description - that sounds like an engine that had a lot of oil in the bores, which was probably a good thing :)

It was on its side in a field so it probably did, and a ton of condensation too. Those old ford cross flows were bullet proof, thankfully.
