Amber shellac - can I spray polyurethane over this?

I’m still stuck with this Strat neck…

If I use something like amber shellac like to give the headstock a nice colour - can I then apply a decal and then spray polyurethane over it? Will it ‘take’ properly?

Or is there something better than amber shellac which will give me that nice yellow tint?
