Using a HK Red Box impedence question

What's Hot

I'm 99% sure I know the answer to this but just checking in case I'm actually an idiot...:)

I'm going to try using an HK redbox instead of the usual SM57 live

You can put these inline between the speaker and the head but I'm wondering if I can save a cable and put it out the second speaker out.

Its not carrying a load so it should have no effect on the impedance?

Is that correct?

I don't get how you are saving a cable?

option 1 Speaker cable from amp to redbox  > speaker cable from redbox to cab (2 cables)

option 2 speaker cable from amp output 2 to redbox (1 cable)

    no?

As far as I know it would effectively be the same as running your head without a load (or in this case with half a load), which would be a bad thing. I wouldn't do it. The fact that the redbox doesn't provide a load is the reason you can't do this, not the reason you can.

Edit : not what I meant

I'm just running it off the second tap. The cab will still be running off the first tap (i.e. providing the load)

The question is will running it off the second tap change the base impedence

  • So isn't that -

Option 1 - Amp to Cable to Red Box to Cable to Cab

    vs

Option 2 - Amp to Cable to Cab plus Amp to Cable to Red Box

So aren't you needing two cables either way?

I'm not explaining this very well I can see. I'm sorry

Option 3 - Amp (speaker output 2)  to Cable to Red box

Back to the original question… ;)

Yes, you can run it from the extra speaker jack without then going to the speaker, *provided* this does not have a switch in it which changes the overall impedance (eg Peavey Classic 30).

In fact it's better to do this because now the current to the speaker is not passing through the Red Box and two extra sets of jack/plug contacts, so is safer - less chance of a bad connection or a cable coming undone.

Also, it does save a *speaker* cable, because if you're doing it this way the cable to the Red Box is not carrying the speaker current and any patch cable will do.

    Ah thanks for that :)

That sounds the most sensible way then (although I'll probably hate the sound)
