My only advice is take your "budget" and stretch it it some, not so you much that it makes you homeless, but just so that it makes you wince and a little uncomfortable. In a few months time you will be over the hump and you will have a cracking guitar to use every day that doesn't feel like a compromise.

Those EJ Strats I have seen on here have been bargains for such a great guitar.

I played an EJ once and was utterly bowled over. I think the 12" radius soft V swung it. Just so comfy compared to any other Fender I've ever played.

I guess it's a horses for courses thing. 

I like V profiles, but very flat strats feel wrong to me.
