New house = new studio

SO, new house means i have a new studio space for all my guitar gear. It's an 8 foot by 6 foot with a chimney breast in it. I'm just not sure how to layout it out so here are the current pics. I need a table for a laptop and a space for my new desktop pc, studio monitors etc. Thoughts on how to lay it out.

That looks suspiciously like a corridor.


Conventional wisdom says you should have your monitors firing down the length of the room ..... which could be tricky.

Do both doors need to be available for access, or can you keep one closed?

Personally with a room like that I'd go for symmetry over the 'ideal' dimension to be firing monitors down; if it were mine I'd be putting the desk on the flat wall opposite the chimney breast (heh, 'breast') and taking advantage of those alcoves either side of it to stick in some heavy-duty bass trapping (if you're able to drill into the walls and have anything even resembling carpentry skills you could make some awesome suspended Rockwool traps that could go high enough to get guitars and amps beneath them too, save cutting down on your floor space; take half a day and cost fifty quid or so).

Should you have a bookcase or something that requires a home, inside the chimney breast (heh, 'breast') with the books in a totally random order also makes a surprisingly effective acoustic diffuser for no money.

You mean there needs to be a door to what looks like a laundry/utility cupboard/room ?  Does there need to be access via you man-cave studio to said laundry area ?

Ahh, the studio is essentially part of the hall way with a door so having the desk against the "back wall" (i.e not the one with the chinmey breast) isnt really an option as it cuts the corridor in half..

The laundry room is our kitchen, Ill try and draw a floor plan

First of all and most importantly. Do not leave any space for an Ironing Board and a Basket of washing!!!. My music room has been overthrown!

Could you not get away with some kind of fold-away desk / bureau thing?

I reckon a nice 3m 40mm kitchen worktop, neatly cut out to go around those pillars would do the business.

Wall batten, chrome legs job done.

End to end work surface.

This could be a red rag to a bull!  Just a piece of Mdf may be a bit less of a microwave/Toaster Magnet.

Thats what Im thinking to be honest.. pop my tower into the fire place, monitor in the recess and Im laughing
