I picked one of these up the other day to use with my new lightweight/portable recording set up.
I'm using Reaper on an i5 laptop and the idea it to be able to record in different rooms in my house without too much fuss setting things up.
(I have a teenage daughter with ASD.. which makes recording in one location difficult..but that's another story)

Anyway.. As I'm the player and producer, I've found having to keep navigating the DAW with the mouse whilst trying to record was a complete pain in the ass.. and what I wanted was the equivalent of a remote control... Hence the Faderport.

I was using it all yesterday evening.. and it was great. It made the whole recording process so much simpler. It installed into Reaper like a dream with most functionality  working straight out of the box. A quick visit to the Reaper support forums directed me to the ReaperXT drivers that enable more options.. and I was 'away'.

I needed a small control surface, with a good motorised fader, that was easy to use and the Faderport scored well on all points.

If you are struggling with your mouse... and want a small, affordable but well made controller, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The following video demonstrates it nicely :)

Lent one to my bass player but he never used it… in fact he's moved to Shrewbury now… might need to get that back! Nifty little device. Got a Audient 2802 that does a lot of the similar DAW controls. Might get it back and flip it on here if anyone's interested.

Looks great!  I've got a Frontier Tranzport, which I also use with Reaper as a control surface, on the rare occasions I find time to use it these days.

The Tranzport (no longer made I think) is quite basic in some ways, but the beauty of it is that it is wireless.  So if you are player, engineer, producer, etcetera all rolled into one, it really frees you up.  Like, if you have a single coil guitar pickup that is generating some buzz, you can move to wherever you get least noise.

Anyway, whichever of these systems is used, it really is amazing compared to the megabucks systems that were needed a few years back to achieve the same result.

  • Pressing record, running to the chair, picking up my guitar... screwing up (red light fever), running back, delete, press record... ad nauseum. Yup!

Sound like a very useful device indeed.
