    ...and brilliant, too. It's the one I use.

    That looks reasonable!

    I've ordered the Hotas X and when it arrives I'll give ED a try.

    I haven't played a flight game since Freespace 2 so I'm really looking forward to this!

    I've just bought Horizons - I don't actually want the planetary landings, but the Engineers upgrade is exactly what I wanted going into Season 2. Unfortunately, I don't have beta access any more (only to the 1.x releases, so I've got 1.6 beta...and the UI changes are a bit annoying so far), so I can't play with the Engineers stuff until it's released.

    It's making me itch a bit.

    Will I be able to run all the detail with this?

    Overclocking: Overclock my CPU by up to 20%
    Memory: 16GB DDR4 2133MHz Memory (2 x 8GB Sticks)
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Graphics Card

    I'd imagine so, yes - there have been a bunch of performance updates in 2.1 too, so they'll help (mainly with the planetary landscape detail).

    It really depends on the resolution and your anti-aliasing settings. At 1920x1080 with reasonable smoothing, you should find it's pretty damn smooth.

    Bear in mind that I'm currently running non-Horizons very smoothly (certainly good enough to play PvP without being at a disadvantage) at 1920x1200 with a 5-year-old i5 2600k and a GeForce 650 Ti, and 8GB RAM.

    How big is the ED download?

    Should I start it now for use after work?

    Not sure - the latest launcher is 122MB, and the game itself is installed by that. Installing the latest beta from there last night took about 15-20 minutes on my fibre connection (at around 7MB/s). If you've got an old ADSL connection, it might take up to an hour or so.

    Is the Deluxe version just the regular game bundled with the Horizons DLC?

    Note that, if you want to use the Engineers crafting feature, you'll need Horizons - the engineer NPCs are based on planets, so you need to be able to land on them to gain access.

    From the way things look, 2.1 is going to change a lot of stuff. Apart from anything, if you want to use the loot/crafting system, you can't just disable the cargo hatch to get more available power on a combat ship any more.

    Then there's the huge weapons - the class 4 beam laser can basically strip any ship of its shields in seconds. Oh, and the boosted drives, which can take an iEagle/Courier up to almost 600m/s.

    Oh, and the NPC AI - they've taken a massive leap forwards, and they can use those drives too...which they use to run as soon as their shields drop.

    This game is going to be a lot harder once 2.1 drops. When it does, I'm probably going to spend a month or two in solo mode, grinding and travelling to upgrade my Vulture so that it's at least capable of surviving for a few minutes against a tanked-up FDL in open.

    My stick has arrived, and the download is complete. Just have to wait until this evening now!

    And I got Tie Fighter and Freespace 2 from gog.com while I was at it.

    I only have 1 hat switch - that is set for engine / shields / weaps management.

    What do you suggest I use for the lateral thrusters?

    OK, this may or may not help, but my mappings are...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Right stick:
    Forward/back: pitch
    Left/right: yaw
    Twisty-twisty: roll
    Trigger - Fire 1
    Hat - power management
    L1 - Boost
    L3 - Flight-assist off toggle (by the way, switch the audio notification off for this, 'cos it's really annoying)
    R3 - Item select in menus/panels
    Left stick:
    Forward/back - throttle axis
    R2 - vertical thruster (down) - this might seem counter-intuitive, but my flying style relies on down thrusters more than up, and this
    one's easiest to reach
    L2 - vertical thruster (up)
    Left/right axis control - horizontal thrusters
    5 - Target the ship I'm pointing at
    6 - Chaff
    7 - Secondary fire
    8 - Target highest-priority hostile
    SE - deploy/retract hardpoints
    ST - switch fire group
    Everything else is on the keyboard -
    SPACE - Supercruise
    J - Frame shift
    End - Landing gear
    Z/X - Cycle subtargets
    ~~~~~~~~~~~

    Also, this video could be *very* useful:

    Basically, it's a way to customise your joystick's response. The HOTAS X is very sensitive close to the centre, which means that fine control in combat can be quite difficult (if not impossible). If you watch the video all the way to the end, you'll end up with much more accurate stick control. It's a brilliant bit of software.

    Thank you!

    Those settings seem quite sensible.

    I'm working my way through the Training missions. I managed to deploy my guns during docking and got destroyed.

    Time for a bit to eat and then I'll remap the buttons and see.
