There is a book I use:
    http://www.systematicproductions.com/mixing-guide.htm

It's really damn useful. If you follow it to the letter, you end up with a really decent starting point. Then you can learn when you need to veer off the path into your own territory.
Does that book cover tracking too? Sorry if that's a really obvious question either way.

Is that the one with the narrow-Q frequency scan for guitars? I've think I might go overboard with that and end up with lifeless guitars by cutting too much.

Yes I've done that before. It is partly less is more but also partly phase changes from the EQ which get worse the more drastically you EQ.

If you use an EQ with a higher quality mode then you wouldn't experience as much degradation with the tone. The trade off for higher quality is usually latency. I recently upgraded from Fab Filter Pro Q to Pro Q2 and the natural phase mode sounds nicer for distorted guitar in the scenario you've mentioned than the standard zero latency mode.

Alternatively try switching the EQ on and off to see if you're making the tone worse. If it is worse try reducing the amount you're killing resonances while listening to the whole mix and find a best compromise.
