Richard and Linda Thompson- Shoot Out The Lights

I've been listening to this again today and it's by miles my favourite RT album.

I think this is because

a) He doesn't sing on every track

b) His tendency to write rather obvious rock n roll type numbers is toned right down here

c) Instead he ups the number of edgy and original ballads

d) His playing is note perfect

Overall my (perhaps heretical) view is that his musical talents are best shown when he's in the role of writer/ arranger/ sideman and soloist.

I am now off to buy a vintage Boss Chorus pedal....

  • I ought to get a copy. I was RT ignorant for many years and only have the mearest scraping of his back catalogue. Acoustic Classics is easily my most played album of the last 6 months or so.

  • Massive RT fan here, and yes that's a brilliant album.

Of the Richard and Linda albums it's certainly the first and last that are the greatest.

Not sure if it was planned but there's something poetic about the duo albums being book-ended like that "I Want to See The Bright Lights Tonight.....Shoot Out the Lights"...especially as they were failing apart when the last album was being made.
