i don't know why but this makes me laugh a lot. it's so casually weird & dark. the humour just about hanging on behind the creepiness, but still there. which i really like in a twisted way.

was this really mainstream comedy in 1970 or fringe late-o-clock subculture?

Benny could be very clever ( particularly his poems and songs) but some of it was just lazy and some of it pretty offensive ( I think the squaw rape sketch is on YouTube which is both offensive and lazy, it's a very old joke). In his personal life he got away with activity that would have him labelled as a sex pest now. 
It was, somehow, mainstream comedy ( we still had the Black and White Minstrel show until 1978, this was another world - I've shown YouTube clips of that to my twenty year old son and he doesn't believe it was real, just some spoof)but it was actually creepy as well. Amazing that it lasted as long as it did really.
