Formula is 1 b3 5 7, so in G we have the notes G Bb D F#, which is xx5332. The open strings available to help us form our open-position Gmmaj7 chord are the G on the open 3rd string and the D on the open 4th string, so the true CAGED-style open-position shape would be -

However, it's nearly impossible to play and sounds a bit rubbish when you do as the m3rd is so low and close to the root, so I'd recommend using up the open G 3rd string to play the Bb m3rd at the 3rd fret, which sounds much better-
