    wow…
although there are stellar performances in there from Guthrie and Gavin..
and some really interesting orchestral stuff going on..
I'm finding myself not really liking it..
it's just too nice for me..

in my lil' opinion… for what it's worth…
21st C should be raw power.. epic blood and snot
    and that just ain't
    it's too beautiful
play every note as if it were your first

You've just managed to sum up my thoughts on this. It was actually better than I was expecting   .... but Schizoid Man should be visceral.

I felt something similar about the new live album - some stunning playing but lacking that raw, elemental power that I associate with Crimson at their best.

Dislike. 21st Century Schizoid Man should be legally protected from schmooth jazz interludes. Like @Clarky says, I want blood and snot. Or snot with blood in it. Or something. Not this.

@english_bob 21st C is our [DC Band] encore..

many moons ago, DC asked me to come up with an arrangement for 21st C so we have a version of our own..

I like our version.. it's energy all the way.. and contains noooooooo jazz

play every note as if it were your first

@english_bob  DC = David Cross.. he used to be in King Crimson..

I'm the fella that makes guitar noises for him

it is worth pointing out that the guitar noises I make for him are generally too often and too loud.. but it keeps me smiling..

Interesting, I listened with mixed emotions.  @steamabacus said it perfectly, it needs to be visceral.  Despite some clever bits it comes across rather like a film score, too exact, too perfectly timed, which makes it too clinical and devoid of emotion IMO.  Not sure the beautification works either, certainly not for me anyway.  Guthrie is great as always though.

I am really glad I listened to that, thanks for posting, the experience of mixed emotions is a fantastic teacher, it brought a resolution to questions I didn't know that I had.   :)

    I totally get that...

beautifully arranged, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered..

but somehow a bit clinical, sterile, no fire in it's belly..

21st C needs angst and ugly.. the riff needs to boot you in the nads...

play every note as if it were your first

Nope don't like it. Wisdoms awarded for some spot on comments.

I remember the first time I heard the original, I was probably about 16 and it scared the crap out of me. It was a brutal, ugly, behemoth of a thing but I LOVED it. This version sounds like a Lalo Schifrin film score.

@Clarky. What's happening with the DC band? You getting out on the road again anytime soon?

KC are one of my favourite bands but I thought long and hard about going to see the latest incarnation when they tour over here later this year. Partly because I'm not a great fan of Jakko's voice or his playing (far too polite somehow) but also because you're right, the new band lacks the power of the older versions. In the end I decided not to go, frankly I'd rather listen to their 70's live recordings.

That's partly the orchestration, which could have done with more a strident brass section, and partly the playing, where the original goes slightly sharp for emphasis, and the Philharmonic stays politely in key.

Having said which, I'm pleased that Schizoid Man has been recognised for the superb piece of music that it is.
