Was in Lords Pav as Eoin Morgan was carrying the Cup last night. As he walked past I asked if I hold it.

"Sure," was Morgs' reply- it's as much yours as it is mine" was the incredibly classy response.

Wow. No wonder players regard him as a true leader.

    that is very classy indeed

AB dV last night- 30k crowd and he put on a masterclass. 88 off 40- hit one 115m onto Grandstand roof off Dan Lawrence. Biggest one I've ever seen at Lord's with the poss exception of Gooch's 6 off Hirwani in 1990. That landed in the Nursery Ground.

    Nice...

Teams out for the Ireland Test match tomorrow. Good to see Stone back. Though the batting looks light with Ali at 6, Woakes at 7.

Have there there not been any other batsman in the championship scoring the weight of runs to challenge Burns and Denly?

Batting looks scary - in a bad way.

Good news is that Leach is playing.  He should out bowl Ali, so Stokes comes back in the team for the Ashes in place of Ali.

Edit: Why play 6 bowlers when the batting is so lightweight.  Pick Foakes as the keeper, which improves the keeping and the batting.

I just hope no more of our bowlers get crocked.

With Archer and Wood missing for the first test, and Anderson by no means guaranteed to be fit we are looking shoer f experienced test-class bowlers.

I can only assume because it is Ireland, and England are taking it easy.

If this was the lineup for Australia a week later I’d be watching from behind the sofa. Buttler and Stokes are rested though so they’re a shoe in for the next test.

Yes Wood is out until at least the 4th test, and Archer apparently for the 2nd test.

They will be back for the Ashes, but the batting is still lightweight.  The top 3 is scary.  I think Burns can be dependable, but the way Roy was playing and missing when the ball was moving around in the World Cup, there is no way he's a test opening batsman.  There was a huge gap between bat and pad at one point as well.  People point to Sehwag, but his stats in countries like England and New Zealand were not good.  Denly isn't a test number 3 either.

If Bairstow or Buttler is coming in at 40 for 3 against a hard ball and a fresh Starc, we are doomed.

I think Roy will be fine. In OD cricket, the way england have played the past 4 years, his mandate is to attack from the off, played and missed doesn’t mean jack in ODI cricket anymore, it’s just a dot ball.

Yes people point to Sehwag, but a lot of people forget that David Warner made his test debut before playing a FC match. He was originally a Twenty/20 specialist, and adapted his game for test cricket. I think Roy is a similar player. And his FC average is 38....I’d like to say it’s not that bad, but there aren’t many others around anyway.

however, there must be more around the county scene? Hasn’t Dominic Sibley been scoring a few runs of late? I don’t think Denly is good enough.

He bats middle order for red ball cricket when playing for Surrey, 5 or 6 when he does play.  I think Roy has the ability to make it and I hope he does, but making your test debut for real against Australia is a very difficult start to a career.

Looking at the England Lions squad, Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley opened in the first class game against Australia.  That generally gives a few pointers to the other players in contention.

Probably late to the party on this one...but why the hell is this Test match only four days long?

Good start.  Roy out twice in 5 runs if he headn't been reprieved by a no-ball.  Now Denly out cheaply.

This top 3 just isn't good enough.  We are likely to get murdered in the Ashes.

How much do you reckon we would need to crowdfund to make Cook an irresistable offer to come back?

    And Burns goes.

We may as well bat in reverse order.

    Root goes for 2. 42-4.

Are we sure this isn't a one-day game?

Oh for fuck's sake. Bairstow goes for a duck. 42-5.

Come on Woakesy, it's up to you and Moeen.

42-5 Bairstow gone for a duck. Going well isn't it? I knew the tests would be a wake up call after the euphoria of the last weeks in the World Cup.

Get Foakes in.  He's a better keeper, and he won't get bowled backing away.
