    I dont think you are strengthening your case by using Steve Vai as a tonal reference :-P
    You...

    ... Fair play :p it's a pretty classic tone though. Not what I want these days, I like a more open, ragged sound but for that focused, boosted lead it's pretty useful!
    to be honest I am a big believer that you can get a good sound from almost anything.
    I had a DS-1 years ago that I used as a light drive.
    I was just never that fond. I really didnt like the look of the dials
    The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

    @viz

    Please elaborate and define what you mean by "go back to the very source and capture the essence that defines each effect category", in particular the "go back to the very source" part.

    You missed Tremolo and Phaser as a categories. edit: and Vibrato and Univibe

    Oh, and Treble Booster category -  unless you regard that as overdrive?

    I wasn't aware that ''sustain'' was a pedal category, other than in the compressor pedal type sense?   The first sustain pedel was arguably a ToneBender mk1.

    @viz -

    If you want to "go back to the source" and be "
    indisputable", then....

    Re: overdrive

    The first overdrive was arguably a treble booster (mid 1960s).  Otherwise, it could considered the Colorsound Power Boost (aka Overdriver), about 1969.

    The Tubescreamer 808 wasn't even the first op-amp based overdrive. I believe that the DOD 250 was the first opamp based overdrive  - circa 1972.

    Re: wah

    The first wah was the Vox Clyde McCoy (by Vox's USA licensee, Thoams Organ & Co.) .   So it's a Vox wah, not Dunlop.   The Dunlop brand didn't even exist then (I think), and the Dunlop wah was merely based on the Vox.

    Re:  distortion

    Don't overlook the MXR Distortion+, if you regard that as distortion.  1973?   Predates Rat and DS1.

    Re: fuzz

    The first production fuzz pedal was a Maestro Fuzztone, so it's that and not the Arbiter Fuzz Face as you listed.

    p.s.

    Re: tremolo (which you omitted from your 'definitive' collection)

    DeArmond 'Tremolo Control'. 1940s.

    p.p.s

    Re: univibe

    Univox Uni-Vibe (designed by Shin-ei)

    Re: phaser

    The MXR Phase 90 and EHX Small Stone both came out in 1974?

    Mu-Tron Phasor - 1972?
