Screws made of cheese

What's Hot
Thanks, gotoh. Your tuners are excellent.

No really. They're lovely, nickel finished and work a charm.

It's a shame that you are aware of how bad your screws are - so much so you include spares in the box, for when one inevitably strips half way in and needs grabbing with pliers to ease out again!

Rant over. I'll fix it tomorrow.

I often have a cheesy screw. It just happens when it happens and if' I've not showered, so be it.

I take it the screws are brass?

If so, trick is to run in with a steel jobby first and a touch of lubricant is also advised. Candle or hard soap  are two good ones but beware that soaps can discolour some woods.

Hate that shitty DIY-screw type material. Worth binning 'em and getting stainless ones.

I haven't noticed the gotoh ones to be that bad. If they are cheese then the Harley Benton ones must be yogurt. All screws get a bit of wax on the way in.

  • Yup, waxed the screw, same as always - it's a bit of a crap shoot. It came with 5 screws more than needed and of these, two stripped really, really easily with a perfect fit screwdriver.

The others were pretty good, went in no trouble.

You *have* to pilot drill these, then wax them and use a good quality screwdriver of the right size and type. You'll be amazed at the number of people who dont believe there is a difference between pozi drive and Phillips, and that there are different sizes of tip...

    That's just gross!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Agreed. The only screws I've ever had break are when I was silly enough to think I could get away with not drilling a pilot hole. Or very rarely when the pilot hole was not the right width or depth.

    Yup, pilot hole *and* waxed.

Correct size hole, perfect match Philips (not pozi) screwdriver.

Just ruined the head immediately - luckily there is loads sticking out for me to grip with pliers and a rubber band, but it's still very frustrating. They are plated in something, and the neck is maple so very hard.

God knows how you'd screw into maple without a hole!

That's just James. I'm sure he washes most days. ;)

M3 tap and machine screws? Button headed Allens would look cool.
