I'm just getting back into bass playing after an extended stint playing rhythm guitar & need some tunes to get my chops back in order. I'm after songs with interesting (& yet not too challenging bass parts).
What are your favourite songs to play?

I've been working on
RATM- Bombtrack
Rancid- Tenderloin & Ruby Soho
Michael Jackson- Beat It

Stevie Wonder - I Wish and Higher Ground (chilli peppers cover is better for bass)

Most things by Madness. Try House of Fun for starters. Lots of good arpeggio lines too in Night boat to Cairo.

Dancing in the moonlight - Thin Lizzy

Town called Malice - The Jam

Good luck on the Jamiroquai catalogue but very rewarding I'm sure if you can get a few of those nailed :)

    You can't hurry love.

And shed loads of other Motown classics have fantastic basslines, courtesy of James Jamerson.

    What's The Frequency, Kenneth? - R.E.M.
    ABC - Jackson 5
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
What Difference Does It Make? - The Smiths

  • Thanks folks- this video gave me several good leads. I'm pretty familiar with RATM, Muse etc but am really enjoying the groove of the soul & Motown lines.

This one is my party piece...but it took me bloody ages to learn the notes, never mind the nuance!

RATM lines are fun, I remember losing myself in learning the whole of the first album back when I started playing.

Motown suggestions are great, I play with A Motown band and it's one of the most fun bass gigs I've had in a long time. Tons of great melodic lines. Just learning a few more Stevie Wonder numbers for a gig this week, Master Blaster has a great bass part throughout, plus one of those great instrumental breaks that Stevie loved to throw around. Definitely good exercise!
