We've got a gig this Saturday and have been told the volume needs to be kept below 85dB or neighbours complain. 

Anybody got a reference for how loud that is? I'm certain we play louder than this...

Is it not about the volume of a hoover?

Gutted... the gig is 10:10pm - 2am on a Saturday night, too!! For £180... between 6 of us (+ sound person)!

That's probably 85dB measure outside the venue Thomas, pretty standard

£180 for four hours on a Saturday? If you pay the seven people equally then that's about £6.40 per hour, less than minimum wage! Even less if you count set up and teardown time.

Ask them where they're measuring 85dB from. If it's inside the building they're idiots and you should tell them you can't achieve that as the applause/ drinks orders etc will easily be louder. If it's outside, which it should be, then it's really up to the venue to have adequately soundproofed their premises, surely?

Yeah I don't think you're going to get more than £200-250 tops from a pub in this area these days...

Stick a suit on, play the same songs at weddings and corporate gigs and stick another £1000 in front of that £250 ..... works for us

We did it. Landlady actually ended up telling us to turn up - even she wasn't sure about this 85dB level

But yeah money wasn't great and never will be playing at pub level with 6 members!
