ooops! minimum depth for headstock?

I had a cock up on the routing front a while ago, and accidentally took a chunk off of the front end of the headstock. I was thinking that I would put some kind of veneer over the top to hide it, but then I wondered what the minimum thickness for a headstock would be? If it took this out then the thickness would be 12mm - not enough?

Or just add a gradual curve to the front of the headstock? Or even continue it all the way around the bottom half. Never know, it might become a new signature headstock design for you

Binding for you, methinks.

I did ebony binding on a fingerboard last year when bandsawing it down revealed a fault in the wood that had to be trimmed away.

It looked awesome when finished.

Headstock thickness is usually dictated to by the machine heads.

What ones are you using?

12mm might be ok.. just.

I've tried before- It is hard to photograph because it is ebony next to dark rosewood.

12mm is usually about the minimum you want.  adding a thin veneer is easy.  adding a thick veneer will need more skill to bend it up the contour..  binding up the contour is also a tricky task

Whilst they can look good, I'm wanting a tele type headstock on this guitar.

Another solution is to do a solid finish on the headstock, matching the body colour.

That was you can just fill it with an offcut of the neck blank.

I suggest the same. Just fill the gap with glue and some ground up dust from the leftovers, then spray it to match the body.
