Quickly! Someone give me a good reason not to buy a Cornford Harlequin at £350

Someone needs to talk me back from the edge here because I'm about to spend my last on this and be damned with the consequences.

No customer service anymore? If that's important to you. Otherwise get a Hurricane ;)

Because they are terrible sounding amps.

All midrange, no clarity, horrible boxy tone. And they have the wrong speaker even if the amp section wasn't as bad.

    In my opinion...

    Don't bother

Having owned the whole range I'd steer clear and at £350 you'll be paying over the odds.

The average they go for secondhand is now £250- 300 max

The bottom has well and truly fallen out of the Cornford market. With carreas fetching £400-450 now and MK50 MK 1 worth little more than £750

To be honest I love the way they sound. But I'm a cornford fanboy.

Do you dislike v30's in general or just in this amp?

It's taken me years to get used to v30's

I love V30s in the right amp - eg a Mesa Trem-o-verb :) - but a 5W amp with a front-loaded cabinet, that's already nothing but midrange and with no top-end at all is about as far from the right amp as it's possible to imagine.

The bulk of the tone 'problem' (by my taste) is in the amp circuit, but using a speaker which has the same sort of limitations and is one of the few which does sound stiff and grainy until it's given a bit more power just makes it worse.

If you like the amp itself, try something like a G12H-30 or a Greenback. If you can get the original speaker out, that is ;).

Most of the time I stick my Mk50ii through the open backed 1x12 made for the hurricane. It is a pain in the arse in the house by itself but it cuts very well in a band. Especially with other instruments. I think it would be different if I were the only guitarist/keyboard player/horn section/whatever and had to fill up more space

  • Ok I've shat it. My only Harlequin experience was about 12 years ago at a guitar show and loved it.... Always meant to pick one up but could never justify the price without an fx loop for practicing rather than just recording. However y'all seem to say they are shit and I don't reaaaaally have the money so I'm just gonna pretend I never seen it
