Paint over the top of sunburst

What's Hot
I seem to be seeing more and more of these

Is this something that fender did or is it a custom job? Is there any reason why you would paint over the top of a sunburst? I quite like it so i can understand for aesthetics but is there another reason behind it?

I think Selmer's refinished sunbursts into custom colours and then sold them to customers

Did they not also take guitars back from dealers which weren't selling because bursts weren't popular at the time then refinish them and send them back out?

    yes, there is precedent

Yes, Fender did them like that sometimes for several reasons.

Personally I think they look awful, even if original.

I think the reason for it is as per lots of old Fender decisions - the accountants.
