  • Just to pick up on the "I'd play for free" thing. They're not paying for your time on stage, they're paying for:

    - turning up 2 hours before kickoff to load in, set up and soundcheck
    - going home not less than one hour after every other fucker has moved on, usually past midnight
    - insurance
    - transport costs
    - rehearsal with the band
    - years of practice to actually get good enough to entertain a crowd for 3 hours.

Much like a lawyer or a dentist, or in @fretmeister's case, a magician - you're not paying for the service, you're paying for the expertise.

20 quid is only maybe 5 pints in Edinburgh. In a place like Whistle Binkies, which must hold over 100, on a weekend almost everyone in the bar will be drinking 5-10 drinks a night, those in there after midnight are usually sinking a *lot* of beer and spirits.

A pint of blackcurrant and soda in there - what I drink when gigging there - is 2.40. Coke was more. The bands were getting anywhere from 50-150, 3 bands on from 6-3, live music sponsored by carlsberg who presumably paid some of the fees.
