There are some surprisingly cheap and interesting mic's you can use on drums, my kids had an old karaoke set, the mic's were really very interesting on the snare drum, very Lofi

One fave studio trick of course is a speaker chassis, preff' on a flat baffle and a 16 Ohm unit would  be the most sensitive.
