grain filler omission?

I rather like that aged look when the paint 'sinks in' on the grain a bit. Would it be likely to achieve that sort of look if you didn't use grain filler on a body prior to spraying?

What a coincidence, I have a body here with nice grain that I wanted to keep but wanted a solid colour in. I have primed it and am going to spray it then lacquer and flatten. This is what it looks like in primer

I'm hoping it stays in the paint as with a flat gloss coat it could look great.

yeah, skip the grainfiller.

but it also reduces your options for buffing the finish because you don't want all the grain filled with white buffing compound.  

Since you are after an "aged" finish its easier anyway, rather than buff with compound to a high shine you can buff with briwax wax to a soft sheen - although be aware wax can make adding more paint a tad difficult so don;t do it too soon

I should point out that one was satin paint so didn't get waxed at all.

Grain filling usually takes 2 goes, so depending on how deep you want your grain you could have one fill application and still have some shallow grain showing, this also means it's easier to remove compound paste from the grain, just a rag will get 90% out.
