I took my mandolin along to a pub folk session for the first time the weekend before last.
It was a pretty intense experience. I thought I could play a bit, and had a least some of the tunes in my repertoire, but the rest were a bit seat of the pants. Lots of playing by ear and blagging it.
As I believe is traditional in these circumstances, beer was drunk. This may have something to do with, when called on to start a tune, my fingers autopilot ripped into a Bellowhead tune set. About 2 bars in I remembered that Jon Boden was sat about a metre away, and Sam Sweeney was at the bar. Luckily they were quite sporting about it and joined in. Apologies for the name drop
Any road, it was a blast and every one was very friendly and welcoming to a nervous newbie.
