Websites default to black text on white - why ?!!

What's Hot
Emp_FabEmp_Fab Frets: 24389
Why the hell is the default for almost all pages black text on a white background ?  (or at least dark text on a lighter background).

This site is one of the worst for it - it's like trying to read a book while staring at the sun.

How can I change the colour scheme so it's light text on a dark background ?  Whatever OS & Browser combination I try, it's always a right PITA and never works properly or just buggers up the colour scheme of the whole computer.

  • It's actually pretty easy on the eyes, as long as your monitor brightness (or, more often, gamma) isn't up too high.

I notice the same problems with all sites, it's like staring into a searchlight. I use colour that site in firefox, this site is now 50 shades of grey, much more easy on the eyes.

LOLOL I must have a mucky mind because anytime I see grey written I associate it with that book title!

The suprisingly frequent use of white print on a black background was one of the things that killed Guitarist for me. Very hard to read. Don't know on my iPad but fairly sure I can change black on white on websites on the work PC. Typing this it is black on pale yellow, which is nice. :)

Flux genuinely changed my life. Sleepy earlier, so I sleep more and feel better. Lovely bit of code that is.

My Yandex browser has a light bulb symbol at the side of the search box, click it & it dims the page which can be set to any shade. Very nice feature.

I have a mild somethingorother that's related to dyslexia and it's horrible reading black text on a white page - it's as if everything wiggles around like the letters are drunk. Thankfully it's better on a screen, and with brightness turned down it's much better. I'm hopeless reading on paper - I never got into reading books as a result.

So.. turn down the brightness a bit?

Get some tinted acetates for books/paper. You need to find the colour that works best for you, but it can make a massive difference.

Some websites drive me bonkers, the ones that use red letters on an orange background or turquoise on green or purple on mauve. Every time I come across one of these insane sites I think my eyes are going.
Stick with the black on white, it might be boring but at least you can bloody read it without getting headaches.
