Best value for money route to the 'Marshall Sound'

I love the vintage Marshall type sound and by that I mean blues breaker era Clapton, free, cream etc. I suppose therefore one of the hand wired reissues would be ideal but they are just too expensive for me at the moment. Is there something more affordable which would get me in the right area for that kind of sound?

Look at a pedal that emulates that sort of gain staging. Something like the Ramble FX Marvell drive. R.

The cab and speakers are more important than the amp for that sort of sound, once you've got the amp in the right ballpark. Greenbacks or G12H-30s in a good ply cab will do the job.

I`m prob sounding like a stuck record - but the jet city jca20hv gets surprisingly close to the 18 watt marshalls - especially through the right speakers as ICBM says.

I haven't heard one of those yet, only the older two-channel models which are closer to a hot-rodded JCM800 type of tone. If anything it should be better than an 18W Marshall for the Clapton/Kossoff sort of tone since it has a proper tone stack.

Maybe the new fender blues breakers? Not quite Marshall but a kinda fender take on the jtm45 / 1959 thing

I just built a single ended amp with a plexi preamp. About 7w from a single EL84, plus VVR for low volume home use. Boy does it roar. Might be up your street. :-)

It constantly puzzles me why Marshall don't make something like this, instead of the crap they keep coming out with which bears no relation to their classic amps at all.

almost any valve amp in your budget with a marshall branded stopbox in front will sound marshally. mind you, it wasn't until i got my jmp 100w that i realised that what made a difference to my other valve amps was that another "key" to my idea of the marshall sound was the "sag".

a used amp will be cheaper than a new one. surely a used jcm800 could suit?

Not vintage exactly but there is a jubilee combo on sale in the classifieds for stupid cheap money. I'm tempted myself just so I can profile it and then sell it on later.
