Gear4music lighting rig any good? Alternatives?

I'll be buying an LED light set for the band soon and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this:

We've been using an ADJ Mega Tripar set for the last few months which was fantastic, but it was on loan and has been returned. We have a budget of up to £250, but obviously if we can spend less, all the better. It's only for pub gigs, and we're not wanting to go mad...quick set up and not too much bulk, but it must be reliable of course.

Any tips? :)

Don't know about that particular item. We use a pair of these, which you can get for £250 the pair on eBay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAM-LED-PARTYBAR-V2-SOUND-ACTIVE-DMX-RGB-LED-LIGHT-EFFECT-BAR-CLUB-DJ-PARTY-/262018311857?hash=item3d018226b1:g:EaYAAOSwjVVV2wOP

We leave them permanently on 'sound to light' mode, with mic sensitive set so low that they only trigger when the music plays.

    Thanks.
Would one of those be enough?
The ADJ one we used was very bright and one was plenty for even quite big rooms.

I don't think so. It's not just light intensity, but also direction. We use one either side of the "stage"

  • Ours looks like the one in the op, although I think it belongs to our singer's employer so I don't know how much it cost. It is bright enough ( painfully bright if you look right at it) to light a typical small pub set up. As @Roland says though it is the direction thing so it is a funny form of light just having it on one side.

Well, just as a follow up, I got the gear4music set in the OP.

The lights themselves are pretty good. We used them at a gig at the weekend and the throw enough light around the room, even with just one set. Plenty bright enough. the quality is 'adequate' rather than industrial, but that's par for the course with something this cheap. They'll last ok I reckon if taken care of.

This will be made easier by the neat little case, which makes them a lot easier to haul around than most lights, as they fold up to quite a compact size.

The instructions are useless Chinglish, but fortunately, setting them up in a simple sound-to-light mode is easy enough.

The supplied stand however is a speaker stand, and therefore too low, maximum height on the lights being about shoulder height. I had a moan to G4M about this, and they were initially a bit defensive, but agreed to sell me a half price lighting T-bar, which seemed fair I suppose. The only issue with that is that the mounting of the light set is 35mm diameter and the T bar is smaller, so it's needed a bit of tweakage to get them to fit together.

So kind of 6/10 could do better, rising to 7/10 with the cheap stand.
