An old aunt leaves you money to take up a new instrument - what would you go for?

What's Hot
I'd probably opt for a Banjo.

My true love would be uilleann pipes, but I think that they would be too noisy and too hard to learn.

The b**jo, on the other hand, being a sweet and resonant sounding thing????

I'd probably ask for a Moog modular. And a house to put it in.

    Harp.

    Lovely sounding things.

Though I'd see if the executor of the will would let me put the money against the cello.

She left you the money under the doormat. Why would you assume she was dead?

    Unless... YOU MURDERED HER!

All the instruments I'd really like to learn are too big to be feasible in my current living space - drums, double bass, marimba.

Theremin could be a lot of fun though...

Definitely piano, I just love hearing one played properly but I don't know where to start other than bashing out a few chords.

    Drums.

Having feet that co-operate with my hands would be nice too.

Indian percussion: kanjira, gatam. Wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on the instruments, just on tuition.

Guitar and then people can be amazed at how quickly I progress.

  • Double bass if it was enough money. Pretty sure I'd be shit but double bass players are the musicians I admire the most as a species. For less money possibly a plastic trumpet, I could alternate between guitar and some basic trumpet in my current band quite well so it would have an almost instant use.

I already play double bass so I'd just buy a more expensive one or a nice upright piano.

Well I just checked and the money isn't there now.  What kind of stupid bitch would put that much money under a door around here?  I'll kill her.
