Which Overdrive Pedal

edited March 2016 in FX

I am learning some of the Eagles stuff and my latest effort is How Long.

Problem is I cant get the right overdrive sound.

I have a Boss BD-2 and a Bad Monkey and I spent the best part of yesterday trying

to get the sound somewhere near but without success.

I am playing through my Boogie 5/25 clean channel.

I have tried the crunch channel but it doesn't sound close.

I don't usually use overdrive sounds it is more clean stuff I play so

not very experienced when it comes to this.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Mark V:25 do you mean, or the Express? Don't think you'd need a pedal if it's a MarkV:25 - I'd go fat clean and gain to suit, dump some bass with the graphic.

How high is the gain on the clean channel?

And can you get it to break-up at all?

    What guitar are you using?

The Zvex Distortron on the high gain side, with the gain rolled back sounds great for a lowish gain sound.
Marshall do some fairly cheaply available decent sounding drive pedals. Of these the Guvnor2 or Jackhammer will do the job well either should be available around £25.  The Mk1 guvnor is more expensive.

Or a clean boost would work well, my choice would be an MXR Microamp.

    Its the Mk5/25 head.

I'm having to DI the guitar until my MJW amp is ready then I will have a cab.

OK, cool. I'd definitely experiment with gain levels on the various clean channels and tweaking the graphic before embarking on a pedal odyssey.

A long shot but have you considered using a compressor in conjunction with the clean channel in one of it's more gainy/fat settings?

The Eagles stuff always sounds quite "produced" to me and a compressor can give a smoothness to the tone that can help get this. Most can also be used as a clean boost too - just up the level to push the amp a bit more. For a long time, I used a compressor as a boost and was happy with the results. Probably works better with lower output pickups but might be worth a go.
