I thought I couldn't get any more un rocknroll than mentioning Doris Day but this is Sissell. Popular choice at funerals, which is where I know it from.

Also look on Youtube for DakhaBrakha (they're from Ukraine). I was lucky enough to see them live last October. Hugely enjoyable gig. If you ever get the chance, go and see them.

When I think of such voices, one always comes to mind for me:

As for voices which really make me sit up and pay attention, Anastacia and Amy Lee are the usual suspects. I'm a sucker for a really powerful female singing voice.

Emmylou Harris, anything she has ever done has been superb, even when just on harmony with Gram Parsons.

Billie Joe Armstrong as well, what a superb voice he has when he wants to use it.

+1 for Sandy Denny, she had a wonderful and pure voice.

I'm going to go with Sam Brown though, I was at this Albert Hall when this was filmed. An amazing performance!

Steve Conte and Maaya Sakamoto. Both have very pure, accurate voices. Put them together and you get something quite wonderful.

Funny that, because I always heard him as a country singer with a blocked nose in green day (in a good way) and that was kind of the joke (again, in a good way) having a very non country punk band with a punked up country influenced singer. The green day fans used to laugh at that idea, maybe I wasn't far off?

Anne Freier from 'I am Harlequin' has a voice I find very haunting...

I suppose they are pretty similar, and although neither of these are really 'my kind of music' really, I do enjoy listening to them.

Sarah Jarosz is a recent discovery for me. Also I have long liked the voices of Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays and Jimmy Somerville. Here's Sarah Jarosz.
