1 minute in:- this panpipe moods shit better get interesting soon.

2 minutes in: Oh right, that's Metheny doing the piano noodly crap. Alright.

3 minutes in: Nice guitar. Dull song.

4 minutes in: musical fart sound emanates from Metheny's instrument.

5 minutes in: farty/electric violin/casio brass sound continues to tootle away, far too loud for the music and totally out of keeping with everything else that's happening.

6 minutes in: widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly widdly. It tracks well, I'll give it that.

7 minutes in: at least now the rest of the band are loud enough to compete with Metheny's toot box.

8 minutes in: big ending. Yawn.

So uh.. yes, they can play solos, but that doesn't mean they should.

    Here's something else guitar synthy:

My "guitar" solo in the attached is played on a synth, not the screechy sounds or the rhythm, but the solo esque bit

I could have played it on guitar but it essentially sounded the same so I couldn't be bothered
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

Maybe you don't "get" the Metheny l, it has a raw visceral quality and harmonic complexity that is up there with some of t most sublime solos of all time imho

@sweepy .. have a wis .. always liked the solo and I still use the GR patch (same tone as Methany's) on my ageing GR33.

Raw, visceral, sure. Still too loud and way too much for that song.

    IMHO.

"Jump" has just been replaced in the top slot of my "worst solos ever" list.

Jump? Interesting choice. I can see how you'd hate the sort of stop-start, pasted-together quality of it, but I can't hear Eddie play without thinking of him in his videos, grinning and gurning for the camera and generally looking like he's having the time of his life, which kind of sells it.

I s'pose that in this one, at least, you can see that Metheny is actually there at the same time as the rest of the band. I assume he has noise-cancelling headphones on under his hair.

Well that's inspired me to take the first synth to the Blues Jam this Sunday, it's first outing in 18 months. TheFretBoard you have a lot to answer for :-)

    IMHO.
In 1982 the track was first recorded (for the solo really) - it was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition at the 1983 Grammy Awards, so for me the track is the solo
The addition of a featured vocalist is an add-on that came 20 years later - In 2002, Jopek did an album with Metheny, covering a few tracks from his back-catalogue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upojenie

the mixing was clearly messed up for this live performance

Try listening to the original, it's an exceptionally good track

I'm not sure that a Grammy nomination is that good a yardstick, considering Milli Vanilli won one a few years later...
