What's your favourite germanium Fuzz Face pedal currently available?  Or which do you reckon is best or that you'd recommend.

Here's a list of suggestions to choose from - or state another if it not listed
  • Dunlop red mini Fuzz Face [designed by Jeorge Tripps]
  • Dunlop Fuzz Face - the big red one
  • Fulltone '69 mk2
  • Earthquaker Devices Dream Catcher [added]
  • JHS Pollinator  [added]
  • MJM London Fuzz (Ge version)
  • Throbak Fuzz Haze
  • Hartman Vintage Germanium Fuzz
  • AnalogMan SunFace *
  • Monsterpiece Classic Fuzz
  • Monsterpiece Ge Fuzz
  • Oxfuzz
  • BuffaloFX Germanium Fuzz
  • Jam Fuzz Phrase  [added]
  • something else - please state
* If choosing the Analogman Sun Face, please also pick a second choice.  (why? cos they're very expensive)

p.s.  It has to be all germanium.  no hybrids allowed.

thanks

If it's a germ./silicon hybrid, I have to disqualify it, sorry.  Please select another :)

Is the Fuzz Factory all germanium?
If so, I'd choose that. You can get Fuzz Facey tones out of it.

  • I like my ultrastoner.

    Okay, it's a muff.

And it has led and silicon clipping options, too. But I tend to use either the led for face melting sounds or germanium for squishy sounds.

Germ fuzz faces are annoying to build, which puts the price silly high. My favourite fuzz face derivative is still the axis fuzz.

Sort of. It's a germanium fuzz with a silicon transistor input buffer, although that's not part of the fuzz circuit itself.

If you can be bothered to build it yourself, the BYOC Tonebender is the best plain germanium fuzz I've heard.

yeah, it's a fuzz face derivative.  i didn't know whether to include it cos it does so much more than straightforward fuzz face clone that it might make comparisons unfair.
i didn't include the mi audio neo fuzz for similar reason.

This is up for pre-order at Andertons. I have seen some discussions that the legitimacy of the NKT275 trannies is questionable, but if that doesn't bother yer then this could be a contender! http://morganamps.com/pedals/nkt275/ T'other one to check out is from Spruce Effects in the US. Looks pretty good - all Ge and some choice over trannies! http://www.spruceeffects.com/effects/lichen-fuzz/

I love fuzz face pedals, it or one of its type is a must on my board at all times.

I'd be really keen to know why people are going for their pedal of choice. What makes it stand out vs the other options.

Im always looking for a new fuzz face

From memory, the monsterpiece classic is absolutely fantastic. That said, it's been nearly a decade since I owned one and I don't know if I've tried anything else on the list.

My Sunface NKT275 is absolutely awesome. Not even any GAS to try any others. I remember a quote on TGP ages ago which said "you'll end up getting the Sunface eventually anyway, so save yourself the time and effort, save up and get it now". It made me chuckle, but I totally agree with hindsight. If I had to take a punt on one from your list, i'd be looking at the Hartman or Oxfuzz I think. I've actually got a BC183 Sunface (warm silicon) to unload, if anyone fancies it?

Out of my collection I'd go with the Dazatronyx Tsuchi fuzz.
    image

If it was a fantasy league table then I'd add in the Pigdog SpaceFace as others have said and the Jesse Davey Vintage Fuzz (which I'm on the look out for both if any one has one needing a new home!).
