  • This one is a bit more simple so that hopefully a few more people enter!

    Perhaps even I might :-)

The chords sound like Dm and G7 .. I'll have a go over the weekend.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Not sure I've consciously played in Dorian mode before. Just had a quick go at a Steely Dan-esque blast, good fun.

The problem is that there are many people here who can do that way better than me. The challenge is to do something a bit different! (at least, that's my challenge to myself)

You can play in the key of C and resolve to the Dm chord ... you can use the Dm Pentatonic scale if you like.

Hey, not done one of these before. Should they be improvised or written (or either)? What about chopping together different takes? Any rules, or is it a free-for-all?

No rules that I am aware of.

I've done this competition a few times now and I try and approach it as if someone has asked me to give them an interesting solo in their track, so I am trying to get it as good as possible as a piece of music, rather than a demonstration of my "chops". In past months I've done improv (once, I think) & composed, single take & stitched together multiple takes. I've also done multiple overlaid guitars which obviously couldn't be played in one go.

If you have a few spare moments you could listen to the previous Solo of the Month playlists (in the "voting" links) and see what other people do.

Right done mine. Bit sloppy and I'm not 100% happy with the sound. But it was a good excuse to get something done with the Helix.

Be interested in what you all think of the tone. Will mail it tomorrow.

Might just have a pop at this.  Plenty of scope to do what one likes really.

    Edit:
Funny how different people have different views on ye olde modes.  Personally, Dorian is my mainstay go-to minor preference if I can avoid Aeolian, which I find hard not to end up in neo-classical land.  Dorian has a more free/jazzy feel to me, and lends well to 'outside' moments or a passing major 3rd.  I will add that Misters Vai and Satriani are huge Dorian users so that's where I've no doubt picked it up from.
    Edit: Said Ionian, meant Aeolian.

Done mine. After last month, I'm trying to be more understated this time :)

    It's not a competition.
