Photographs to Canvas Query

I'm considering printing some digital pictures to a canvas frame and then painting over the image using acrylics or oil or something..? Has anyone any experience or advice about such an undertaking?

Any tips on preparing pics for canvas much appreciated. I have made a single small canvas at Jessops using their machine's choices, but in laying an image on for subsequent work perhaps overexposed or some such might be good?  Also, I've no experience at all in paints, so pointers on best materials are welcome. Thanks.
