Volume pedals with EXP output

I need to replace my rickety old fender volume pedal as it is starting to become sad and not work every time. 

I have been looking at both ernie ball and dunlop ones and I notices some have an EXP out as well as the other ins and outs. 

How does that work then? Are they some how switchable between modes?

Some have a switch - hotone soul press,   some just have an extra exp socket prewired like the dunlop,    it just means you can use a TRS jack plug instead of using a Y lead with two mono jacks wired to the tip and ring of a trs jack at the other end - I use my ernie ball pedals like that.       Having a dedicated exp socket would be handy and make the wiring a little neater I guess.
