bought a 9v PS a few weeks ago from Maplin it appears tae to be a good buy

I'm now after a 12v ands the Maplin one is a little expensive by comparison....pic above

the Maplin job is also a no name made in China.....their stuff on this occasion is rather expensive compared tae a lot of the competition....is the Maplin one a step up in quality you think?

tae be or not tae be

I'm not sure anything Maplin sell is particularly good quality.

The Chinese factories will, in general, make things as well as you ask and pay them to. I've had good results with the supples that Rapid Electronics sell, fer instance:

Regulated means that the output voltage will remain the same under differing loads. Yes, it is important.

so if choice available go regulated?

    thanks Sporkers....would like it tae be 750mA - 1000

Going over on current capacity is not a problem - the load will only draw what it needs. A 2mA load on a 20A supply will be just fine. Similarly that 1200mA supply won't cause any harm if you draw less than 1200mA. GOing over on voltage is a bad idea though.

And definitely go regulated unless the kit was specifically designed to use an unregulated supply (which is pretty rare).

    Definitely go regulated.
Whenever I've used unregulated supplies they've been noisy and some make a weird whistling noise through certain pedals.

  • I used to buy those units from Poundstretcher where you can pick your own voltage all the time. I always thought the noise was due to dirty electricity or too close to crt or lighting or the washing machine etc. Until I decided to try a regulated unit. Most things cleaned up to a relatively quiet noise floor

so it's regulated then....but is one make as good as another? £7 or £20?

There will be varying quality levels for supplies with the same rating from the same factory, and the price isn't necessarily an indicator. A good supplier is probably the best thing to go on.

Both of those power supplies are centre positive, 99% of pedals are centre negative, so you'll probably need to snip the wires and swap the polarity.  Don't use them without checking, some pedals could be damaged if you do.
