Nice thread! My current Fave band, Big Big Train. This starts off a bit folky sounding, but it's a lovely gentle track. Skip to about 2.30 for some divine layered vocals.

Also, a long time fave track of mine, June by Spocks Beard:

working out and laying down harmonies, is pretty much a lot of what mrs bert does in her 'day job'
Cheers Bertie. Thing is, with my selections, I also know that they can reproduce it live as I've seen quite a few of them do it. Jellyfish were sensational!

I am ever more convinced that Jellyfish should have been way, way bigger, One of my favourite bands ever, for sure. Love them.

To add to your point about reproducing the harmonies live:

Pretty cool - lots of parts there and they pull them all off rather well...

    Anyone said The Eagles yet?

Yes, and no surprise that their Timothy B.Schmit has done countless backing vocal sessions. Richard Page (Mr.Mister) is another one who can be found on lots of stuff.

I think you can have a good band/good musicians, but if the vocals are pants, it's lost. However, the opposite can work.

With my pop hat on, there was a relatively unknown and now defunct British boy band called BBMak who had some brief success in the US. They had great vocals and yes, amongst all the teens with their parents picking them up after the gig, me and a few mates went to see them!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afku7mTe3YM

Let's not forget 10CC, Supertramp, Pilot and ELO!

Been listening to this on repeat all day. Phenomenal, and the "Beatles cadence" at the end is just wonderful :)

Crosby and Nash (Stills was elsewhere I assume) doing Guinevere. Also played using one of the most beautiful alternate tunings I know.

  • Been listening to these guys for the first time in a while today.

    HARMONY

Great guitar and bass parts, too.  Solid band live as well.  These guys really broadened my musical horizons.

  • The 60s gave us some great harmony performers, off the top of my head :-
    The Mamas & The Papas
    The Hollies
    The Move
    The Turtles
The Who - Just listen to Behind Blue Eyes for an example

  • For more stuff with cool harmonies in the Alice in chains vibe you could check out a band called "Days of the New".

We spend quite a lot of time working on harmonies for our band as I think having good vocal harmonies live really sets you apart, especially in a metal band.

+1 for The Everly Brothers who did after all invent vocal harmonies!
